Club - History

Formation

On May 1st, 1986, the BMW-Coupé Club e. V. has been founded under the name of BMW-Coupé Club Deutschland e.V..

As ambitious "recreational mechanic", on occasion of a necessary partial restoration of his BMW 3.0 CSL bought in September 1979 (editorial note: glaring yellow!), early 1982 Rainer Schneider was looking for spare parts. His advertisement placed in a car magazine was answered by Werner Hand, and the first contact was established between both future founder members of our Club.

In the course of years, the contacts became closer and the group of people sharing the same hobby (BMW Coupé E9) increased.

It was decided to form a community of interest and to regularly hold common organized meetings.

The constantly increasing number of members in this community and the fact that the common use of either the trademark "BMW" and the BMW logo was legally prohibited caused the need to consider the future.

Already subsequent to the second main meeting of the community, in late summer 1985 the final decision toward a Club formation was made. During winter, further necessary information was gathered, samples of Articles were designed and rejected again.

On May 1st, 1986, in Eltville/Rhein, finally the Articles as well as a the Minutes of Formation were issued, of course preceded by longsome exhausting revision of each individual clause.
Finally and after some additional slight modifications demanded by authorities, everything was accomplished:

The

BMW Coupé-Club Deutschland e. V.

was born!

Development of membership

The founder members of the BMW Coupé Club Deutschland e. V. whose engagement is of indispensable significance for this Club are:

Werner Hand

Klaus Hinkel

Günther Mangold

Kurt Schierfeld

Rainer Schneider

Ulrike Schneider

Hans-Günter Schwarze

The trend of membership does not only represent the general fluctuation within such communities, but also the natural selection of vehicles which regrettably cannot be dismissed.

Due to the fact that, at that time, most of the vehicles were used as workaday-cars with bodies not perfectly protected against corrosion, inevitably the time of significant repairs or restorations was foreseeable.

Thus, often several Coupés were bought, disassembled and reassembled to one complete vehicle. The residues of the other car bodies were scrapped.
Moreover, also original parts of the vehicles became rare and thus expensive after termination of the Coupé production. This forced many fanciers and Club members to give up their hobby.

But for several years now, increasing interest and an enhanced situation in the spare part market can be noticed (also see our chapter New Parts). This is especially due to the fact that in the meantime Coupés rarely are used as workaday-cars, but carefully maintained as fancy cars.
