In 1968, as successor of the Coupés 2000C and 2000CS the new series E9 Coupés with the 2800CS model was launched.
The most obvious change, compared to the Coupés 2000C/CS, was the extended fore carriage with a new face and, of course, the new 6-cylinder engine already known from the 2500/2800 saloon.
Designated "M30", this engine which was highly recommended by experts shall be used until 1995, though processed, with the M5 series.
Just like the 2000 C/CS, the chassis was produced at the Karmann
works in the city of Rheine.
The corporation with Karmann ended in 1989 when the production
of the 6-series Coupés was dislocated to Dingolfing.
From 1971 on, the Coupés were offered with further types of engines and models. With the 3.0 CS (carburetor) and the 3.0 CSi (fuel injection), the engine's displacement was increased to 3 Litre and the power raised to 180 PS respectively 200 PS.
Also in 1971, the 3.0 CSL was launched, originally as a basic car for motor racing. At first, the 3.0 CSL was equipped with the engine of the 3.0 CS with 180 PS. From August 1972 on, also the 200 PS fuel injection engine of the 3.0 CSi was available.
As a result of the 1974 oil crisis, BMW launched the smallest E9 model: the 2,5 CS. This car disposed of an 2.5-litre engine with 150 PS, and the hitherto standard aluminum rims where changed into steel rims.
Already in 1972, the BMW-Coupé (E9) could be seen on TV. The comedy «Ein Käfer gibt Vollgas (D/CH 1972)» shows the Coupé driven by Joachim Fuchsberger, acting as a police inspector, chasing criminals.
Definitely, the design of E9 Coupés was crowned by the lightweight-Coupé 3.0 CSL, anyhow saving about 200 KG of weight. With its doors and lids made of aluminum as well as a slimmed interior equipment, the 3.0 CSL served as basic car for motor sports engagement.
With the racing versions of the 3.0 CSL (3,5 liter engine displacement/360 PS), numerous trophies could be gathered and competitors were frightened. Famous drivers like Dieter Quester and Hans-Joachim Stuck jr. could set striking benchmarks in their career with the help of this car.
In 1975, BMW as the first German automotive works
invested in a
project : "Art and automobile".
The BMW Art Cars where borne.

Unfortunately, by the end of 1975 the production of the E9 series, surely the most beautiful Coupés, was ceased.
